Depressed in the Northwest

Before “dragged through the garden” became the default Chicago dog, there was the Depression Dog. Minimal by design, it sticks to the essentials — mustard, sweet brown relish, chopped sweet onion, and sport peppers on a steamed poppy seed bun. We give a nod to the garden purists with a sprinkle of celery salt and a dill pickle on the side, but you won’t find neon green relish or tomato slices on a Yacht Dog. This is our tribute to an earlier Chicago dog tradition, when simple was the point.
